The Space Between

Connecting a mid-century modern residence to its detached garage presented an opportunity to create something more meaningful than a simple corridor. This mahogany and glass breezeway honors the home’s original architectural language while establishing a new relationship between structure and landscape.

Twelve-foot spans of floor-to-ceiling windows and three skylights transform the passage into a light-filled gallery that changes throughout the day and across seasons. The living sedum roof and mahogany slat wall extend the architecture into the surrounding woodland, reflecting the mid-century ideal of buildings existing within nature rather than imposed upon it.

The interior details required precision at every level. Custom millwork, an integrated bench, and an open-riser staircase with exposed joinery demonstrate how contemporary craft standards can enhance period-appropriate design. The staircase is particularly honest: its clean lines and visible joinery mean every cut and connection is on display. Each element balances visual restraint with technical rigor, ensuring the addition will age as gracefully as the home it serves.
