This secluded property’s lower level needed to evolve from a fragmented au pair accommodation into a comprehensive age-in-place suite for the homeowners’ family member. The challenge wasn’t just reconfiguring the space but anticipating needs that would change over time.
The new floor plan encompasses a primary bedroom with walk-in closet, full bathroom, living room, kitchen, sitting room, and laundry. Each room was designed with both immediate comfort and future accessibility in mind. Large appliances like the dishwasher, washer, and dryer were mounted at heights that eliminate unnecessary bending. Doorways and circulation paths maintain ADA clearances, creating space for future in-home assistance if needed without telegraphing institutional design.
Natural light transformed the equation entirely. French doors and full-height windows connect each room to the property’s wooded surroundings. What’s typically the darkest, most compromised level of a home became living space that doesn’t feel like a concession.
